Medium-Chain Fatty Acids Promote Health
The saturated fat in extra virgin coconut oil is medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). Unlike other fats, MCFAs in coconut oil are sent directly to the liver where they are immediately converted into energy. When you eat coconut oil, the body uses it right away to make energy rather than store fat. Because this easy absorption puts less strain on the pancreas, liver and digestive system, coconut oil helps to actually increase the body’s natural metabolism and helps burn more calories in a day.
Lauric Acid- An Immune-Specific Nutrient
Coconut oil is about 50 percent lauric acid, a rare medium-chain fatty acid found in mother's milk that supports healthy metabolism and is now being studied for its anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial health-protecting properties. Overall, coconut oil contains 92% saturated fats, and only 1% Omega-6, the fat Americans get way too much of. Mary Enig, an internationally known expert in fats and lipid biochemistry, and author of the well-researched, “fat information bible” Know Your Fats, promotes coconut oil and its ability to boost the immune system and keep the body in good health.
Is Saturated Fat Bad?
Not necessarily! Coconut oil contains naturally occurring saturated fat, but what you haven’t heard is that certain saturated fats:
Are necessary for your health--your brain is comprised mostly of saturated fatAre not the primary cause of weight gain (the real culprits are refined carbohydrates, sugars, and processed seed oils such as safflower, soy and corn oils)Come in three classes, of which the medium-chain type (as found in coconut oil) can actually help increase your metabolism.
Coconut Oil
The Well Kept Secret for Beautiful Skin
For the best in natural skincare, use our extra virgin coconut oil as you would any lotion. It helps prevent destructive, free-radical formation and provides protection against them. It helps the skin from developing liver spots and other blemishes caused by aging or over-exposure to sunlight. Sagging and wrinkling is diminished by coconut oil’s amazing ability to keep the connective tissues strong and supple. The rich, creamy oil is easily absorbed into the skin and into the cell structure of the connective tissues, helping to limit damage that excessive sun exposure can cause.
Coconut oil helps bring temporary relief to dry and chapped skin, but also delivers health-promoting nutrients to restore a youthful, smooth, more beautiful complexion to all types of skin. These are lasting benefits, unlike most lotions that actually cause the skin to dry out more. Most lotions created a barrier on the skin to trap moisture- this gives the temporary appearance of hydrated skin, but in long term actually dehydrates the skin. Coconut oil can be considered food for the skin, thus giving it the vital nutrients to repair and restore. Coconut oil also aids in removing the outer layer of dead skin cells, making the skin’s upper dermis healthier and smoother and more capable of generating new, healthy skin cells. Over time, the skin can begin to appear more evenly textured with a healthy “glow.”
Does the Quality of Coconut Oil Matter?
Of course. You should be absolutely certain of the quality of whatever coconut oil you choose. There is a very wide variation in coconut oil – where the coconuts are grown (and thus the quality of its phytonutrient factors), the processing of the oil (which can range from sheer “junk” oil to the ultimate quality), the storage of the oil, and more – all which have a major impact on the healthiness and effectiveness of your coconut oil. Typical coconut oil available in the US has been bleached, deodorized, solvent-extracted and hydrogenated – a very unhealthy oil.
This extra virgin coconut oil is made using traditional methods- not mass-processed with solvents and chemicals, like most other oils. Our premium oil is made with fresh coconuts from pristine, rural areas of Kerala, India, completely untainted by urban pollution. Coconut oil from Kerala is considered the best in the world, in large part because Kerala has ultra-nutrient-rich soil that has never been pesticided and is saturated with pure, ionizing ocean air. There are no dangers of mycotoxins, aflatoxins and undesirable bacterial contaminants that can form in coconut oil made from “copra” (old, partially moldy coconuts that have fallen to the ground.) This superior quality is the key difference, not only in terms of safety, taste and easy digestibility, but also in terms of health-promoting benefits.
The Many Uses of Coconut Oil
Use coconut oil just as you would any other oil. It is solid at room temperature below 76 degrees and a liquid at temperatures that are higher. Therefore, as a solid, you can use it like butter- or if liquid, like any other oil. Try spreading on bread or toast, mixing it into smoothies, adding to salad dressings, and mixing it into oatmeal or other grain dishes. You will be surprised at all of the delicious ways to use this amazing oil.
It is excellent when used in cooking. Coconut oil has a high smoke point (keeps its structure under high heat) when stir-frying or sautéing and is considered to be one of the best, safest oils to use for cooking as well as one of the healthiest oils to use in your diet. Even during cooking, its unique structure is kept intact and is resistant to trans fat formation and free radical mutations of its fatty acid chains, even when used as high cooking temperatures.
Do I Have to Keep Coconut Oil Refrigerated?
No. Since coconut oil maintains its chemical structure under high heat it will not go rancid if kept at room temperature. You may store it in the fridge, but it will make it hard and less easy to spread. After opening, use within 2 months.
Recommended Use:
Adults: use 1 tablespoon daily.Children, including infants: 2 teaspoons daily. For example, add 1 tablespoon to your favorite smoothie or mix in cooked grain dishes. You may also mix into hot water and drink it, or eat it right off the spoon.
For the Skin: Apply it all over your body in the shower, lightly rinse and pat dry. Use it as a night cream or hand lotion also. After application your skin will feel slightly oily, but after a few minutes the oil will completely absorb.
